Trees are a favourite subject for many photographers and I'm no exception: they come in all variety of shapes, sizes and colours and look good as a single tree or as a group. In addition, for many lanscapes, they introduce a vertical line thereby providing an element of compositional contrast. It was with this in mind that I recently visited the Birks near Aberfeldy. It was one of those days, however, when nothing quite caught me eye: the light wasn't quite right, the autumn colours had faded, and photographically nothing quite lined up. In looking at the big picture, however, it's easy to forget that tree details can also provide opportunities and it was by chance that I spotted this - what caught my eye was the unusual shapes, textures and colours.
